West Bend Receives Community Partner Award

volunteer_center.jpgThank you to the lovely and dedicated folks at the Volunteer Center Washington County for the Community Partner award last night at the 2016 Champions of Change event! We're both honored and humbled. Congratulations to all of the incredible people that give so selflessly of their time and talent to help others.

Thank you, Sue Millin, for your nomination and kind words:

West Bend Mutual Insurance Co. supports countless causes and charities in and around West Bend and has created a culture of giving that extends far beyond their corporation. They are blessed with kindhearted and generous associates. West Bend not only encourages their associates to volunteer, but provides them with many opportunities to give back in a meaningful and impactful way. Many of their associates bring high-level skills to nonprofit boards and committees, which makes a HUGE difference to local nonprofits.

West Bend associates generously donate their time, talents, and treasures. Each year, dozens of associates spend a full day building homes for Habitat for Humanity. Many participate in the local United Way Campaign by donating to the cause. In fact, because of their generosity, West Bend consistently meets or exceeds their United Way fundraising goals. They participate in events like the Boys and Girls Club 5K for Kids and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and raise pledges for these very worthy causes. For the past 25 years, associates have adopted families in need during the holidays, donated money for toys, food, and gift cards. They help ease the burden and make the holidays brighter for many area families.

Regardless of the cause or the need, West Bend associates show their creativity and enthusiasm, along with their compassion and generosity, day in and day out. They don’t just know what it means to help a friend in need, they live it each day.

Race Car Drive Duke Long Visits West Bend

The Celebrating Cultures Committee arranged for Duke Long to stop by with his race car and chat with the associates.  Many attempted, and thankfully, none failed getting in and out of the car which was a feat in itself!  West Bend is a community sponsor of his car.  What a fun experience!

Guardian Fee Covered by West Bend for Honor Flights

Mary_Trudell.jpgOn Saturday, May 21st, the 23rd Badger Honor Flight (BHF) flew with 83 veterans and their accompanying guardians. A new milestone was crossed because BHF flew their 2,000th veteran. Veterans and their guardians were photographed in the terminal before they boarded. At the end of the flight, a homecoming including jazz band, bag pipers and Bucky Badger helped fire up the crowd and cheers rose as two of the volunteers ran through the crowd with a sign announcing 30 minutes to landing. Even louder cheers broke out for each of the veterans as they came down the escalator or were wheeled out of the elevator escorted by service members from the Air National Guard, Army National Guard Marine Corps League and other veterans in uniform.

Murray Trudell and Henry Semph, and their West Bend guardians LoAnn Trudell (daughter-in-law) and Nicole Knickmeyer (granddaughter) were on Saturday's flight. West Bend contributes the $500 guardian fee to accompany a parent or parent-in-law on these flights. Murray was asked what part he liked best - he said he liked it all. He could not believe how well they were treated by everyone involved as well as the public. He was so moved by the letters during "mail call" - the tears were streaming - for both us. A day neither one of us will forget!
