When a child is sexually abused most people assume an adult is the perpetrator. In reality, according to Darkness to Light, up to 40% of children who are sexually abused are abused by older, or more powerful children.
School shootings and child abductions get major news coverage and send parents and childcare providers scrambling to ensure their children are safe. While the likelihood of a childcare center being the target of an active shooter is relatively slim, it’s easy to imagine a facility dealing with a contentious custody dispute between two parents.
Youth coaches, camp counselors, and after-school staff are committed to the well-being of the children in their programs. A vital part of this dedication includes engaging with children in games and other fun activities.
Reality Alert: A child with diabetes enrolled in a YMCA day camp program. While testing her blood sugar levels before lunch one day, the child’s friends were curious about her testing supplies.
A mentor in a Big Brothers Big Sisters program was charged with sexually assaulting his young mentee. The child said his mentor showed him pornographic websites and abused him both in a dorm room and in a car.
Reality Alert: Several Jewish Community Centers across the country recently reported receiving bomb threats. While none of these threats resulted in an actual explosion, a bomb threat can be very traumatizing for patrons and employees alike.
