Secondary Drowning

Reality Alert: A minor incident nearly turned tragic after a young boy began exhibiting signs of a potentially fatal condition called secondary drowning. While attending a birthday party earlier in the day the young boy fell into a hot tub, but was instantly rescued.

Real Life Claims: A child at a home daycare facility was given aspirin after falling down, but the child suffered from an aspirin allergy which triggered an asthma attack. The child’s aspirin allergy was known by his parents, but undisclosed to the facility.

In the News: A young girl attempted suicide after being cyber bullied for months due to some embarrassing photos of her that were posted on Facebook. The girl’s mother said as the bullying continued her daughter would refuse to go to school or would go in late to avoid her tormentors.

In the News: An eleven-year-old boy hung himself after repeatedly being bullied and tormented at school. The victim was a good student who participated in football, Boy Scouts, and was a very active member of his church and community.

Concussions in the News: A series of concussions during a youth football game nearly claimed the life of a 13-year-old athlete. He is now permanently disabled. During the game the boy suffered a blow to the head that did not cause a loss of consciousness, but did result in him missing three plays.

Child Abuse in the News: A 19-month-old child was found dead by police in his home. He was believed to have been a long suffering victim of neglect and abuse. During the course of their investigation, the police discovered that an employee at the child care center the child attended saw early warning signs.

Head lice are one of the most common health concerns affecting children across the United States every year. While lice do not pose any major health concerns other than infection from excessive scratching, outbreaks can be devastating to nonprofit, youth-focused, and community-based organizations.

Real Life Asthma Attacks: A teacher had to rush to the aid of a child after noticing he was lying down on the playground. After attending to the child she noticed he was breathing very heavily and was unable to speak.

Playground Injuries in the News: On a chilly day in California several children were playing on a playground structure. As a 2-year-old began climbing the steps to the slide, the drawstring from his hooded sweatshirt got caught between the slats and stretched tight.

Real Life Archery Injuries: A young boy was shot in the eye during target practice at an archery range. He and a friend were unsupervised and taking turns shooting at a target, but it was windy so the target kept falling over.
